Killed by German Artillery fire while setting up HQ in Avekapelle, Belgium. T.Z.M. Lechowicz was also killed by the direct hit on the building and Gnr. Bennett was wounded by shrapnel to the left leg.
The 6 Field Regiment (Royal Canadian Artillery) war diary reports on September 9, 1944:
Avekapelle, Belgium.
Fairly quiet morning. Fired some battery targets in support of Infantry as South Saskatchewan Regiment advanced to Nieuwpoort, Belgium, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders to De Panne, Belgium and Fusiliers Montreal to Koksijde, Belgium. Slight resistance encountered and several Mike targets fired. Out area received light shelling for one hour. Casualties 2 killed including Capt K.J. Kelsey our paymaster and 6 wounded. 88 guns were engaged effectively by Major Dale Harris and they never fired again. Fired more Mike targets on enemy retreating West to Dunkerque, France from De Panne. Weather cold and windy but first clear day in the past four days.
