A file in his service records reads: "Trooper Vernham (7th RECCE) was driving a Flame Thrower Carrier (WASP) which hit a landmine on October 12, 1944 in the vicinity of 500 yards south of Hoofdplaat, Netherlands. The complete front portion of the carrier was blown off and torn to pieces."
