Disembarked in France on February 25, 1945.
On the morning of 28 Feb 45 at approx 0200 hrs discovery was made of the body of Gunner Theriault, L., 17 Cdn Fd Regt. RCA, hanging half out of the tank couple, while on route from Marseille, France on a train loaded with troops. It was apparent that he was climbing out of the turret while facing the rear of the train. A portion of his head had been crushed.
B/16579 Gunner Theriault, Lionel was killed while attempting to climb out of the turret of a Sherman tank which was loaded on a flat-car, while the train was in motion. His head had apparently struck a log hanging obstruction, quite possibly an overhead bridge.
