Died in road accident

Private Beamish was returning from an unauthorized visit to the grave of a fallen soldier. He was given a ride by three American soldiers, and they first stopped to have something to eat.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., the vehicle in which they were travelling was involved in an accident on the road between Waarschoot and Eeklo, Belgium. While overtaking another vehicle, an unlit vehicle suddenly appeared from the opposite direction. The driver of the jeep carrying Beamish did everything possible to avoid a collision but lost control of the steering. The jeep overturned and came to rest in a nearby ditch.

As a result of the impact, Private Beamish was thrown from the vehicle. He lost consciousness and subsequently drowned in the ditch. The American soldiers transported his body to Balhofstede, near IJzendijke in the Netherlands, where he was temporarily buried.
