Halifax II W1244 MP-D was on a mission to Saarbrücken, Germany.
The aircraft was shot down by night fighter pilot Wilhelm Herget 9./NJG 4. The bomber crashed into a swamp near Woumen, Belgium and exploded on impact. The entire crew was taken Prisoner of War, apart from the Pilot. Sherwood was found on October 5, 1942 at the crash side.
