"ALWAYS REMEMBERED BY ALL OF US WHO LOVED HIM. KATH. AND FAMILIES"
British Royal Engineers were refuelling their ‘Congas’ (a modified Bren gun carrier with the engine removed and a storage tank to hold Liquid Nitro Glycerine in its place) - these were used in a system for clearing mines. The LNG would be pumped into a pipe or a hose and detonated to explode any mines either side of it.
At approximately 1300 hrs there was a massive explosion, which was devastating. The entire farm (Fam. Dedobbelaere) and Military equipement was destroyed by the blast. The farm located about 3 miles South of IJzendijke, Netherlands. A high casualty list of 41 British and Canadians killed in action and 51 wounded. Several reported 'missing in action'.
