The Highland Light Infantry of Canada war diary reports on October 9, 1944: This morning at 0200 hrs we landed in amphibious in craft on the south bank of the Schelde estuary. The first wave was 30 minutes late due to many of our craft bogging down in the mud which has already become a major obstacle to progress. On touch down all of our companies were held up by small arms fire. Mortar and artillery fire was also encountered and progress was limited. Our objectives were not reached. Our reserve company was heavily shelled on the crossing. Storm boats were assigned to smoke out the big guns at Flushing (Vlissingen), Netherlands but were all knocked out and we are now under observation from there. Battalion HQ is set up a present on Amber Beach (close to the Paulina war memorial, Biervliet, Netherlands) and we are under heavy and continuous shellfire. At 0800 hrs all companies are on their objectives except "B" Coy who are situated on the south end of the beach and are being held up by heavy fire from MG's and 20mm flack guns. The SDG (Stormont Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders of Canada) landing behind the NNS (North Nova Scotia Highlanders of Canada) met no opposition until after daylight when they were heavily shelled. At 1400 hrs the SDG landing is still going well and they are well on their way to Hoofdplaat, Netherlands which is their objective. At 2200 hrs our casualties so far total 25 all ranks. CSM McDonald (Highland Light Infantry of Canada) was killed after a very fine record with the Battalion since mobilization. Rear Battalion HQ will not cross tonight but all trailers with supplies and amn will.
