A handwritten letter: "On or about 13 Sept 1944 near Brugge, Belgium, liberated the 12 Sept, by Canadians, Lt. C.A. Channell led a patrol to locate the enemy. He was killed by a grenade thrown over a wall. One of the men with him told me in October that Mr. Channell wanted to make the German prisoner instead of shooting him he hurled the grenade."
